Wyandotte County jail inmate dies at hospital

A convicted murderer being held in the Wyandotte County Jail died at a hospital Tuesday after experiencing what authorities said was a medical emergency.

Eric D. Clay, 22, experienced a medical problem in his cell Monday and was taken to a hospital where he died Tuesday afternoon, officials said. An autopsy will be conducted to determine a cause of death.

Clay was awaiting sentencing after a jury convicted him last year in the 2012 shooting deaths of Keith Barrett, 21, and Renesha Jones, 16, who was babysitting Barrett’s infant son. The baby was wounded in the incident that occurred in the 2100 block of South Mill Street.
