The former longtime sheriff of Saline County, Mo., was sentenced Tuesday to nine months in federal prison for embezzling thousands of dollars in taxpayer funds over more than five years.

Wallace Newman George Jr., 71, resigned a year ago after 36 years as sheriff and pleaded guilty to one count of stealing nearly $79,000 from state-issued checks meant to reimburse Saline County for prisoner expenses.
