Independence police search for gunman who tried to rob insurance office

A gunman trying to hold up an insurance office in Independence shot a woman Wednesday.

The incident occurred just before 2 p.m. at the Dingledine Insurance Group in the 16000 block of East 23rd Street, just east of Lee’s Summit Road.

A man walked in and demanded money. As an office worker raced out the front door, the gunman fired a shot that struck her, said Tom Gentry, a police spokesman.

The man last was seen heading north on foot on Trail Ridge Drive. The woman was taken to a hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.

Police were searching the area nearby.
