Kansas couple accused of making moonshine and selling it for $20 a quart
A Kansas couple who allegedly sold homemade moonshine from their basement still are facing federal charges.
A federal grand jury indicted Ryan Penner, 41, and Jennifer Penner, 37, of Newton, Kan., on charges of possession of an unregistered still, unlawful production of distilled spirits and failing to be a bonded distiller.
Police in Newton, about 25 miles north of Wichita, got a tip in August that the Penners were making and selling moonshine, according to federal prosecutors.
Undercover officers contacted the couple and made several purchases. The liquor was being sold for about $20 a quart, prosecutors said.
Authorities served a search warrant at the home and seized the still, which they said was made using a 15-gallon beer keg and copper tubing.
