Grandview man charged with murder of accomplice in robbery attempt

A 22-year-old Grandview man was charged Friday in the Oct. 3 shooting death of his alleged accomplice in a Kansas City robbery attempt.

Cory J. Highsmith was charged in Jackson County Circuit Court with second-degree murder in the killing of 21-year-old Keith Johnson.

Highsmith is also charged with attempted first-degree murder and armed criminal action.

According to court documents, Highsmith and Johnson allegedly conspired to rob another person in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 9300 block of Bales Avenue.

Witnesses reportedly said Johnson pointed a gun at the intended victim and demanded his property.

The intended victim was also armed and later told police that he shot Johnson. The intended victim fled the scene, but later contacted police and gave a statement.

Under Missouri law, someone who commits a dangerous felony that results in a death can be held responsible for the killing.
