Another felon is facing a gun charge after falling asleep in car
For the second time in a week, a man found by area police asleep in a car is facing a federal charge of illegally possessing a firearm.
The latest incident occurred Sunday at a gas station in the 3100 block of Gillham Road.
Kansas City police were called by private security officers who pointed out a car with a man sleeping inside. Officers saw the man with a .223-caliber semi-automatic pistol in his lap, according to court documents.
Police reached in and removed the weapon before removing the man, 22-year-old Dontae A. Strother.
Strother is a convicted felon who is currently on parole and cannot legally possess a firearm, according to the charges filed in U.S. District Court in Kansas City.
Kansas City, Kan., police encountered a similar situation the previous weekend when they found a running car in the middle of the street with a sleeping man inside.
Kevin L. Martin, 35, was charged last week in federal court in Kansas City, Kan., after officers say they found a 9mm handgun next to him, according to documents filed in that case.
