Former Kansas City postal carrier admits role in distribution of PCP

A former Kansas City postal carrier pleaded guilty Monday to conspiring with a California man to distribute gallons of the hallucinogenic drug PCP.

Carol Barfield, 65, admitted in Monday’s guilty plea in U.S. District Court in Kansas City that she delivered shipments of the drug that were sent through the mail by her co-defendant, Michael Garrett.

Garrett, 57, of Victorville, Calif., pleaded guilty earlier this year and is awaiting sentencing.

During the conspiracy between November 2015 and March, gallon bottles of the drug were mailed by Garrett to addresses on Barfield’s postal route, according to court documents.

Garrett mailed a total of 15 parcels to separate addresses on Barfield’s carrier route, according to the terms of her plea agreement.

The people named as recipients on the packages did not live at the listed addresses. Barfield would mark the packages as delivered, but then take them to the intended recipients, according to the documents.

When questioned about the scheme, Barfield said Garrett would sometimes travel to Kansas City, and she would deliver the packages to him.

She said that in exchange for delivering the packages, Garrett bought her clothes, fixed her car and provided her with spending money.

Barfield said she did not know how much total money she had received from him.

Sentencing dates for Barfield and Garrett have not been set.
