Two Kansas City teens face charges in connection to shooting
Two Kansas City teenagers face criminal weapons charges for their alleged role in a shooting earlier this week that left one of them with life-threatening injuries.
Romahn M. Burgin, 17, and Brandon A. Cotton, 19, both of Kansas City, face unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action charges for the shooting that happened Wednesday at 27th Street and Van Brunt Boulevard.
According to court records, officers responded to a reported shooting at 39th Street and Chelsea Avenue and found Cotton suffering from two gunshot wounds. Burgin was applying pressure to the wound when officers arrived. Cotton was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. His condition was not available on Friday.
Investigators obtained surveillance video that showed the two men get out of their vehicle and walk to a van parked at 27th Street and Van Brunt Boulevard. According to the records, Cotton pointed a rifle with a scope at the driver’s side window, and shots were fired by someone in the van. Witnesses told police they saw Cotton stumble backward, away from the van. Witnesses said the van backed out of a parking space; nearly hitting Cotton, who was sprawled on the pavement.
Cotton told Burgin that he had been shot, and they got in their vehicle and drove away until they pulled over near 39th Street and Chelsea Avenue. Burgin later told police he threw away the gun before they arrived, prosecutors say.
