It was an ill-advised place for Kevin L. Martin to take a nap — behind the wheel of a running car on a public street.

Especially since Martin is a convicted felon and there allegedly was a 9mm handgun on the seat next to him where Kansas City, Kan., police found him sleeping.

Martin, 35, is now facing a charge of felon in possession of a firearm.

When police were called on Saturday to the area of 18th Street and Wilson Boulevard, they removed the gun from the vehicle and turned off the car before waking Martin, according to court documents.

As he came to, police said he reached for the area where the gun had been. He refused their commands to get out of the car and then kicked open the passenger door and tried to run, according to the documents.

He only made it a few feet and was arrested.

Besides the gun, police reported finding synthetic marijuana and a bottle of what appeared to be PCP in the car, according to the documents.

Prison records show that Martin has prior convictions for involuntary manslaughter and drug offenses.
