Jackson County prosecutors have accused a Kansas City Police Department detention facility officer of theft for allegedly taking money from a detainee.

Aaron L. Godfrey was charged Tuesday with one count of misdemeanor theft. He was placed on leave without pay after his arrest, Kansas City Police Capt. Stacey Graves said.

According to court documents, Godfrey, a civilian employee at the department’s South Patrol Division Detention Facility, was in charge of inventory of a man arrested in June.

Prosecutors contend that a review of video in August showed Godfrey placing bills into his left pocket while conducting a money count during processing of the man.

Godfrey reportedly told police during questioning in September that he stole a $100 bill from the prisoner, although a money count showed the loss was $1,800.

Prosecutors have requested a $1,500 bond.
