Civilian on police ride-along escapes injury in collision that injured two KC officers

A civilian who was participating in a ride-along with Kansas City police escaped injury Saturday in a collision that injured two officers and the driver of a stolen Jeep.

The civilian was in a department-issued SUV with two police officers who were responding to a call about 9 p.m. when their vehicle was T-boned by a Jeep that was speeding away from a second police vehicle.

Two officers in the SUV were injured. The civilian was not hurt.

The driver of the Jeep was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. He was not arrested, said a police spokesman, who added that the Jeep was reported stolen in North Kansas City.

The incident began near 27th Street and Lister Avenue on the city’s East Side. Officers saw a white Jeep driving erratically. The driver of the Jeep fled after seeing the marked patrol vehicle, the police spokesman said.

The Jeep sped northbound on Elmwood, the spokesman said. The officers did not pursue or attempt to stop the Jeep, he said.

The Jeep failed to stop at the intersection of 24th Street and Elmwood Avenue and collided with the police SUV.
