A 23-year-old Ottawa police officer faces a drunken driving charge after he alleged crashed his vehicle late Monday while off duty and not in uniform.

Ottawa police said Tuesday morning that Officer Derek Butters, a two-year department veteran, also faces traffic charges of duty to report, duty upon striking unattended vehicle or object, texting and no proof of insurance.

Butters was booked into Franklin County jail on $2,900 bond.

Police responded to the single-vehicle crash about 10:45 p.m. in the 200 block of East 15th Street in Ottawa. The vehicle struck a utility pole, heavily damaging the pole and the vehicle.

Arriving officers found Butters nearby in the 1400 block of South Hickory Street.

Butters suffered minor injuries and was examined by Franklin County emergency medical technicians.

He has been placed on administrative leave.
