Police search for driver in fatal pedestrian hit-and-run in Independence

Police on Monday requested the public’s help in finding a silver sedan involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash Friday that killed a 38-year-old man who was walking along U.S. 40 in Independence.

Police identified the man as Derrick Hubbard of Independence. He died at the scene.

The crash occurred as Hubbard was walking west about 9 p.m. Friday on the north shoulder of U.S. 40 near South River Boulevard.

Police think a silver sedan, possibly a late-model Dodge Avenger, struck Hubbard and then left the scene, continuing west on U.S. 40. Police think the car is missing the driver’s side mirror and headlight lens.

Police released surveillance video of the car as it passed a business along U.S. 40 near Washington Avenue prior to the crash in the hope that someone would recognize the car.

Anyone with information about the fatal hit-and-run or the location of the car is asked to contact Independence police at 816-325-7300, the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477), or the Independence Tips Hotline at 816-325-7777 or leads@indepmo.org.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
