Jury convicts Independence man in 2014 fatal shooting of another man
A Jackson County jury on Wednesday found an Independence man guilty in the October 2014 fatal shooting of Samuel Hewitt.
Melvin M. McCaslin, 43, was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and armed criminal action for shooting Hewitt, also of Independence.
Jackson County prosecutors originally charged McCaslin with second-degree murder, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Hewitt was shot Oct. 24 in the 8600 block of Thompson Avenue in Kansas City.
According to court documents, the men got into a fight before McCaslin allegedly shot Hewitt in the head while he was “unresponsive” on the ground.
Sentencing was set for Nov. 18.
