Police arrested a man early Thursday after he allegedly shot a woman and then refused to surrender for four hours at the Smithville Housing Authority apartments.

Police responded to the apartments near Missouri Route F and Maple Avenue shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday.

When officers arrived, they found a woman who had gunshot wounds. She was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Clay County Sheriff’s office, which assisted Smithville police during the standoff.

A man refused to surrender to police. Police evacuated surrounding apartments while they tried to get the man to come out.

Shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday, the man surrendered to police and he was taken into custody. Once police were finished checking the apartment, residents were allowed to return home.
