During a family fun night Monday at Summit Waves in Lee’s Summit, two incidents occurred, one involving a gun, according to the city’s parks and recreation department.

According to a news release, Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation Marketing and Communications manager Melissa Pfannenstiel, an altercation occurred in the water park’s parking lot following the event.

Officers with the Lee’s Summit Police Department were called to the area, Pfannenstiel said.

“No weapons were involved or located in connection with that incident, and at this time, no injuries have been reported,” Pfannenstiel said.

Prior to the event, Pfannenstiel said pool staff received a report at 6:30 p.m. regarding a possible weapon in a bag. Pool security responded and found a weapon inside a bag belonging to a juvenile.

The juvenile was apprehended, “and the matter has been referred to Family Court,” Pfannenstiel said.

“We are grateful for the cooperation of our guests, the attentiveness of our staff and contracted security team, and the support of the Lee’s Summit Police Department,” Pfannenstiel said. “The safety systems and procedures in place worked as intended and allowed staff to respond quickly and appropriately when concerns arose.”

Pfannenstiel called the event a success.

“Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation is happy to report another successful Family Fun Night at Summit Waves, where families came together to enjoy a fun and welcoming evening,” Pfannenstiel said.
