Summit Lakes Middle School received a threatening call Monday evening that prompted a police investigation, Lee’s Summit School District officials said.

Education at the building proceeded as scheduled Tuesday.

“While the call appears similar to hoax threats that have been reported in school districts across the country, that does not change the seriousness of the situation,” school officials wrote in a message to staff and parents Tuesday morning. “We are continuing to collaborate closely with law enforcement today.”

The message said the school received a voicemail that featured an automated voice that made both bomb and weapon threats, which prompted school officials to contact law enforcement.

Police checked both Summit Lakes Middle School and nearby Trailridge Elementary School and performed a walkthrough Tuesday morning, school officials said, noting that additional officers were present on campus Tuesday.

“Based on the results of this investigation, we plan to proceed with our normal school day,” school officials said Tuesday morning. “However, we understand that hearing about situations like this can be concerning for families. Please know that the safety of our students and staff is always our highest priority, and we take any report suggesting potential harm to our school community very seriously.”
