Lee’s Summit police officer dragged by vehicle, injured in shoplifting response
A Lee’s Summit police officer suffered minor injuries after he was dragged by a vehicle while he was attempting to make an arrest in the Summit Woods Crossing development on Saturday, police said.
The officer was taken to a local hospital, treated for his injuries and released, the Lee’s Summit Police Department said.
Police were called to the shopping development on Northwest Chipman Road around 3:45 p.m. Saturday after a loss prevention officer at Target reported that a woman entered the store, allegedly stole several items and then drove over to Best Buy, police said. The employee gave police a description of the woman and her vehicle.
An officer attempted to detain the woman as she left Best Buy, but she ignored him and got in her vehicle, police said. The officer was caught in between the vehicle and the open driver’s door and was dragged as the vehicle reversed, hit a sign, crossed the traffic lanes in front of Best Buy and hit a curb.
The officer then fell from the vehicle and it sped away.
Police said Sunday the woman had not been arrested but that her identity was known. Police said the matter was being investigated as a robbery.
