With Dillons move into KC market, new supermarket location eyed in Lee’s Summit
A grocery store developer is eying a location near Lee’s Summit North High School for a large new Dillons supermarket as the chain expands into the Kansas City metro.
Plans filed with the city of Lee’s Summit earlier this month show the supermarket would be located south of the new Evren apartment complex along Tudor Road and west of Lee’s Summit North High School, across Douglas Street.
Under the proposal, the site would become home to a roughly 100,000-square-foot grocery store, a gas station and 5,400 square feet of retail space, according to documents filed with the city.
A Monday letter notifying neighbors of the project indicated Phillips Edison and Company, a large grocery store developer, is requesting approval of a preliminary development plan for the site, as well as a rezoning of the property to a commercial designation.
The developers plan to hold a neighborhood meeting about the project at 6 p.m. on March 19 at the nearby Missouri Innovation Campus and are tentatively scheduled to present the project to the Lee’s Summit Planning Commission on April 9, the letter said.
In an email to The Star, Dillons spokeswoman Sheila Regehr declined to confirm plans for the Lee’s Summit store but said the brand was “actively exploring several potential locations across the Kansas City market” to complement a new Olathe store.
“We are encouraged by the strong interest and the budding opportunities ahead,” she said. “While there are no additional site details to share at this time, Dillons remains committed to growing our presence in the market.”
The Dillons brand is owned by Kroger, a large grocery store chain, and locally, Dillons has locations in Lawrence and Leavenworth. Last year, as the brand announced it would be opening an Olathe location, it nodded to further plans for expansion into the Kansas City market. Another Dillons location in the metro has been proposed in Kansas City’s Northland at 10807 N. Oak Trafficway.
