Tricks, treats and fun: Downtown Lee’s Summit offers these and more for families
What says Halloween, beyond pumpkins, candy and haunted homes?
In Lee’s Summit, about 2,000 people are expected to enjoy a family friendly day filled with contests, candy and a parade to celebrate Halloween and the fall season.
The annual Boos, Barks & Badges Halloween Parade will kick off at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Start the day with a costume contest at 9:30 a.m. in City Hall Plaza, and enjoy trick-or-treating at 10:15 a.m. in downtown Lee’s Summit, following the parade. The event is free and reservations are not required.
People are encouraged to dress up and bring their family, friends, kids and even pets.
Julie Cook, events and promotions director at Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street said there are five categories for the costume contest, and one includes those beloved pets.
“This event is loved in our community, and families look forward to attending it every year. It’s special for people to bring their kids and pets to an event downtown, and it’s something nice we get to do for the community each year. We block off the streets so the area is safe for trick-or-treating.”
After the parade, people can enjoy a variety of restaurants, bars and family friendly fun to continue the celebration, Cook said.
Many small businesses have their storefronts decked out in Halloween decorations to add to the ambiance, Cook said, adding that it makes it even better for the kids who are trick-or-treating.
Courtney Laufketter, co-owner of Budget Blinds, said she and her dog dress up every year and pass out candy in front of their store. Last year, they were both chefs. This year, her dog will dress as an old man, she said.
“Everyone is normally excited to see my dog’s costumes each year,” Laufketter said. “This event brings a lot of families down here so we can show off our downtown and how great it is to be able to walk around, open shops and hand out candy to promote a family atmosphere.”
Some businesses, including Budget Blinds, have nut-free options for kids with allergies, Laufketter said. Family friendly fun and safety is a priority, so providing these options are important to make sure everyone has what they need to have a great time, she said.
