About 500 people will come together soon for a night of philanthropy, with a common goal of supporting local students and families.

The 21st annual Taste of Lee’s Summit begins at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 7 at the John Knox Pavilion, 520 N.W. Murray Road, Lee’s Summit.

Last year’s event netted approximately $115,000, and this year’s goal is $120,000, said Sheryl Franke, executive director of the Lee’s Summit Educational Foundation.

“We’re so grateful to live in such a giving community, especially one that values the importance of education and the comfort of students,” Franke said. “It’s a wonderful, festive evening where people come together to celebrate students and promote learning.”

Around 100 community volunteers help set up the event, which showcases community support and dedication to students and families, Franke said.

“This is one of the most anticipated events in the community,” Franke said. “It’s very well-supported. People get to socialize, while knowing that everything they’re doing benefits students. It’s great for the community.”

Lee’s Summit Educational Foundation board of directors member and chairwoman of the event Trish Frevert said it’s nice to see how the community comes together for a good cause.

“It’s a win-win for everybody,” Frevert said. “People come together for this philanthropic event with the intent to benefit students in the community.”

Great Beginnings Early Education Center principal Kerry Boehm said event proceeds allow the center to help families in need, as well as teachers who need funding for projects and field trips.

“People want to give back to schools, but they don’t know how,” Boehm said. “This event is about the bigger picture. Grants allow us to expand our resources and provide opportunities where we wouldn’t have been able to before.”

The event includes a live and silent auction, games, raffles and food from 12 vendors. Tickets are available in advance at $80 per person, and guests must be 21 or older to attend. Proceeds from the event benefit the Lee’s Summit Educational Foundation, a nonprofit that raises private funds to support programs within the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District, such as PEAK (competitive classroom grants that Promote Excellence and Knowledge) grants, and music and technology programs.
