Broncos wrestlers claim five medals during Holiday Invitational tourney
Lee’s Summit North had one champion and four other medalists during an eighth-place team finish last weekend at Lee’s Summit High School’s Holiday Invitational wrestling tournament.
Jaden Duran led the way for the Broncos with a championship in the 138-pound weight class.
Duran, a senior, beat Liberty’s Drake Smith 6-0 in the final and improved to 16-4 overall this season during the tourney.
Sophomore Triston Jones placed third for North at 145 pounds. Jones (16-3) downed McCluer North’s Julian Hays 4-2 in the consolation final.
Adrian Castaneda placed fourth at 160 pounds. Castaneda (13-4) lost a 3-0 decision against Fort Zumwalt South’s Chase Mercer in the third-place bout.
At 182 pounds, Zane Ragland also took fourth, getting pinned by Rockhurst’s Patrick Broyles in the third-place match.
Finally, Cody Steinbrugge finished sixth at 106 pounds for North, which totaled 176 team points.
Lee’s Summit West, which finished 16th as a team with 107.5 points, had fifth-place finishes from 138-pounder Morgan Potts and 170-pounder Thomas Brown along with a sixth-place finish from 152-pounder Corbin Copsey.
The host Tigers finished 21st with 69 team points led by Lorenzo Turney, who took fifth at 113 pounds.
Liberty won the team title with 296 points, edging Francis Howell (294.5). Bonner Springs (263) and Fort Zumwalt South (259) rounded out the top four.
A champion for SCA
Summit Christian Academy senior Brett Campbell won the 195-pound championship during the Battle of the Valley Christmas Tournament at Missouri Valley College in Marshall.
Campbell, an undefeated Class 1 state champion at 182 pounds last season, went 6-0 during the tournament. He finished off the title with a 10-5 decision against Knob Noster’s Kodie Bellury in the final.
Campbell and Bellury are ranked first and second in Class 1.
Additionally, Braeden Campbell place fifth at 145 pounds and Max Park was sixth at 285 pounds for the Eagles, who finished 18th overall in the 44-team field with 191.5 points.
