Lee’s Summit West’s Phillip Brooks chosen as Simone Award semifinalist

Lee’s Summit West running back Phillip Brooks has been selected as one of 10 semifinalists for the Thomas A. Simone Award, which honors the top high school football player in the Kansas City area.

Brooks — a 5-foot-9, 165-pound senior — rushed for 1,666 yards on 211 carries and scored 21 touchdowns for West, which finished 8-3 after losing to Rockhurst in the Class 6, District 4 semifinals. Brooks also caught 24 passes for 556 yards and eight touchdowns and threw a TD pass.

Joining Brooks as semifinalists are Lawrence quarterback Dante Jackson, Blue Valley North quarterback Graham Mertz, Staley quarterback John Raybourn, Park Hill wide receiver Ronnie Bell, Shawnee Mission East running back Milton Braasch, Lawrence Free State running back Jax Dineen, Schlagle running back Ivan Webb, Rockhurst running back/linebacker Brady McCanles and Liberty running back/defensive back Robert Rawie.

The semifinalists for the other five Simone Awards were also selected. Lee’s Summit senior T.J. Kennedy is a semifinalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, which goes to the best lineman or linebacker.

Four finalists for each award, AS selected by the Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association and select members of the media, will be announced by Nov. 28. Winners will be announced Dec. 5 at the high school of the Simone Award recipient.

Staley running back Julian Ross won last year’s Simone Award. The last Lee’s Summit player to win was Lee’s Summit quarterback and current Missouri Tiger Drew Lock in 2014.
