‘Community Conversations’ panel discussion slated for Saturday

The city of Lee’s Summit’s Human Relations Commission is inviting citizens to join “Community Conversations,” a panel discussion scheduled for 6 p.m. on Oct. 7 in the council chambers of City Hall, 220 S.E. Green Street.

Panel participants will include Mayor Randy Rhoads, City Manager Stephen Arbo, MCC President Kirk Nooks, Community Activist Carl Boyd, Police Chief Travis Forbes, and Lee’s Summit Cares member Susan Coffman.

The panel will hear pre-recorded video responses from residents and members of the city council prior to the panel discussion on the following three questions:

▪ How can Lee’s Summit better engage all people in our community?

▪ How do we show our residents they are valued and respected?

▪ How can Lee’s Summit residents openly discuss cultural differences to continue to build our great community?

Attendees will be asked to submit their own questions.

The city said this is the first of several events being planned by the commission in an effort to encourage positive relationships throughout the community.

Fall events come to Sylvia Bailey Park

The Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation Department is inviting the public to spend weekends in October at Sylvia Bailey Park, 1800 S.E. Ranson Road in Lee’s Summit.

The park has a six-acre corn maze, hay mountain, corn box, and pumpkin bowling.

Regular hours of operation are noon to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays in October. Admission is $6 per person. Ages 3 and under are admitted free.

The park also has the following special events scheduled 7 to 10 p.m. through the end of October:

▪ Flashlight Fridays - Oct. 6 and Oct. 13

▪ Haunted Maze - Oct 20-21 and Oct. 27-28

Admission for special events is $5.

Lane closure scheduled Wednesday on U.S. 50

The Missouri Department of Transportation recently announced a lane closure along east and westbound U.S. 50 between Blackwell Road and Missouri 7 in Lee’s Summit starting at 9 a.m. on Oct. 4 until 3 p.m. on Oct. 6.

The lane closure is for median work. Motorists are asked to plan ahead and find an alternate route, if necessary. All work is weather permitting.

Longview Chapel chili supper to be held Saturday

The Longview Chapel Annual Chili Supper is scheduled from 3 to 7 p.m. on Oct. 7 at the chapel, 850 S.W. Longview Rd. in Lee’s Summit.

The event will offer chili, dessert, and drinks. The cost to attend is $7 for adults or $4 for children ages 5 to 10. Children 5 and under are free.

Proceeds from the dinner will support Life Lines provided by the men’s club at the church.
