The idea came to fruition as a result of a crowd-funding challenge.
Earlier this year, the National Main Street Center, Project for Public Spaces and ioby hosted the “Cultivating Place on Main Streets Crowdfunding Challenge” to award matching dollars to proposed placemaking projects in five states that focused on activating community spaces. Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street, a nonprofit organization focused on the preservation of historic Downtown Lee’s Summit, said it was selected as one of the pilot communities for the crowd-funding challenge.
Proposed funds for the placemaking project were raised from public support through a crowd-funding campaign.
The nonprofit reported the crowd-funding campaign raised $3,900 from nearly 50 community members and businesses with $1,500 of that matched by the hosts of the crowd-funding challenge, allowing nearly $5,400 total to be devoted to the Downtown Movie Night project. The funds were set to be used to buy the rights to the films and to purchase the necessary equipment for hosting outdoor movies, including a projector, screen and sound system.
Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street said on its ioby campaign page that it currently hosts hundreds of events each year downtown. The nonprofit said it came up with the idea to try out Downtown Movie Night after hearing suggestions from members of the community. It also described the space at City Hall Plaza as underutilized, and said there were future plans for a potential market pavilion and performing arts space.
Each movie night will feature a classic family-friendly movie. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and picnics to enjoy during the event. The movie nights will be held in the City Hall Plaza area near Third and Green streets in downtown Lee’s Summit.
