Business notes: Overland Park firm designs brewery building in N. Carolina

Finkle + Williams Architecture of Overland Park has designed the new distribution center for New Belgium Brewery in Asheville, N.C. Construction was recently completed on the 140,000-square-foot center, which includes 88,000-square-feet of refrigeration space.
New Belgium will begin shipping beer from the distribution center by the end of this year, the architectural firm said. The facility will serve the eastern United States and support the Fort Collins, Colo.-based brewery’s national expansion.
Finkle + Williams said it designed the new facility to use 25 percent less energy than a traditional distribution building.
Winning pitch
Communications Integrity Group, based in Olathe, has been named a regional winner in an “Innovations 4 Entrepreneurs” program sponsored by Comcast Business. The company will receive $10,000 to help expand their business, and it is also in the running for a $20,000 grand prize and consultation services from business management experts and Comcast executives.
The company was one of 32 regional winners from around the country. It said it would use its cash award to further develop its hardware and software used in voice and data networks.
“To be a small business owner, a dreamer, a doer and entrepreneur and to get any recognition is overwhelming,” said Gary Horn, the chief executive of Communications Integrity Group.
Six businesses from across the country will be selected as national winners the week of June 1.
De Soto school bonds
Moody’s Investors Service has assigned a rating of Aa3 to a series of De Soto School District bonds. The service also maintained that Aa3 rating on $107 million of general obligation bonds. Moody’s cited the school district’s “growing tax base, sound financial operations with healthy reserves, (and) stable enrollment.”
Golf magazine wins awards
“Golf Course Management” magazine, the monthly publication of the Lawrence-based Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, recently won 15 awards at the annual Turf and Ornamental Communicators Association Communications contest.
In addition to the awards, magazine editor Howard Richman was named the organization’s Plant Health Writer of the Year. He was recognized for excellence in writing about plant health issues relevant to the golfing industry.
The Golf Course association represents about 18,000 membes in more than 78 countries.
