Camelot Court makeover underway in Leawood

Leawood’s Camelot Court has kicked off its long planned facelift.

Work is being done on the facade and roof of a north end building and expected to be completed by early May, according to the building’s tenants, which include Corner Bakery Cafe and Smoothie King. They will remain open during the construction.

A Corner Bakery Cafe manager said the restaurant also will get a new enclosed patio with fireplace.

Officials with MD Management, owners of the center, couldn’t be reached for comment this week.

The center has Community Improvement District, or CID, status and will charge shoppers an additional 1 cent sales tax to pay for exterior improvements such as landscaping, lighting, irrigation, signs and closing one of the three entrances from Roe Avenue. The entire redevelopment plan is estimated to cost about $36 million.

Camelot Court opened around 1990 at the corner at northeast corner of 119th Street and Roe Avenue in Leawood.

It is home to such tenants as Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que, Red Door Grill Woodfire Kitchen & Bar and Hen House.

Subway Cafe for Overland Park

Nearly seven years after the first Subway Cafe opened as a test in Alexandria, Va., it is coming to Overland Park.

The company plans a mid-April opening at 11011 Antioch Road, just north of Hayward’s Pit Bar B Que at College Boulevard and Antioch in Overland Park.

Esquire magazine has described the Subway Cafes as Subway’s yuppie stepbrother. The cafes feature leatherette chairs and two order lines — one for sandwiches and one for drinks and pastries.

They have all of Subway’s menu favorites, but also espressos, lattes, mochas, cappuccinos, chai options, hot cocoa, tea and some frozen drink options, as well as pastries.

So customers won’t have to go to Subway for their sandwiches and another outlet for their premium drinks.

Subway also plans to open traditional Subway shops in the Cleaver II Boulevard Shoppes at 47th and Troost, and in 39Rainbow, at 39th and Rainbow in Kansas City, Kan., both scheduled for late April or early May openings. Another Subway is scheduled to open in Lenexa in early May.

JoCo restaurant updates

▪ Pita Pit, a quick-service franchise serving pita sandwiches, plans to open April 6 at 8775 W. 95th St. in Overland Park.

The company was founded in Ontario, Canada, in 1995 and had once targeted college towns with area locations in Columbia, Lawrence and Manhattan. The menu includes meat pitas (like the Dagwood with turkey, Black Forest ham, prime rib, shredded lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cheddar cheese, light mayonnaise and horseradish dip), veggie pitas and breakfast pitas.

▪ Ginger Sue’s has opened its third area cafe with more planned for the metro area.

The locally owned breakfast and lunch operation took a spot in the Shops of Avignon, 14178 W. 119th St., Olathe. The 119th Street Diner formerly occupied the space.

Menu items include breakfast burritos, breakfast scrambles, Belgian waffles, Cajun crepes, chocolate chip pancakes, biscuits and gravy, omelets, smoothies, specialty coffee, a variety of sandwiches and wraps, hamburgers, fish-n-chips, meat loaf and specialty salads.

Ginger Fuller and her husband, David Bradley, opened their first restaurant in downtown Liberty in 2007 and added a Lee's Summit restaurant in 2012.
