Clarkson Construction leads team on $288 million interchange project
A joint venture led by Kansas City-based Clarkson Construction Co. has won a $288 million contract for the reconstruction of the Interstate 435, Interstate 35 and Kansas 10 interchange.
Gateway Interchange Constructors was one of three teams that submitted proposals to the Kansas Department of Transportation for the design and building portion of the so-called Johnson County Gateway Project.
Besides Clarkson, the team includes Kiewit Infrastructure Co., part of the Omaha-based construction and engineering conglomerate; George Butler Associates Inc., based in Lenexa; and Omaha-based HDR Engineering Inc.
Gateway received the highest score of the three teams that sought the contract, the state said. “GIC exceeded our expectations with the improvements they are able to build and the time it will take them to do it,” Burt Morey, project manager for the transportation department, said in a statement. “Their approach will allow us to improve many of the existing issues drivers see today.”
Construction is expected to begin in late spring, and the project is scheduled to be completed by Dec. 31, 2016.
The state said the $288 million contract includes a $3 million incentive for the Clarkson-led team to complete the work by the end of 2016.
The state said it plans to schedule meetings with area business and civic groups to discuss the construction schedule and potential traffic impact. It also plans to hold a public open house in the spring to review the construction timetable and other issues.
