A duplex in Olathe is expected to be a total loss after a significant blaze kept firefighters busy for around 30 minutes and killed two pets in the home Friday night, a spokesperson said.

Crews responded around 10 p.m. for a reported fire near E. Cothrell Street and N. Walker Lane. Flames were lapping from the home when firefighters arrived, a spokesperson said on social media.

After about a half-hour, firefighters put out the blaze.

Flames scorched both sides of the duplex, and significant damage made the home unlivable, a spokesperson said.

No one was injured in the fire, but two pets — a cat and a hamster — were killed in the fire. A pet python survived the blaze, a spokesperson said.

According to preliminary findings, investigators believe the fire originated from a laundry room.
