How does a Kool-Aid Play-Doh workshop sound? Edgerton kids are up for spring break fun

Edgerton has a cure for any spring break boredom, with a slate of activities open to residents of the city.

Brittany Paddock, recreation coordinator for Edgerton, designed the week of hands-on activities to get elementary school kids moving around while also learning about their community. It’s the first time she’s done a new event for every weekday of spring break.

She’s built up the programs over the last few years, starting with a leprechaun scavenger hunt.

“I try to choose places to get people out to our different parks around town,” Paddock said. “Last year I also incorporated local businesses, like our banks, our lady who cuts hair here — just getting them out meeting new people.”

She suggested kids have a teen or adult along for that one. Although the hunt is walkable, it might be easier to do with a car or by bike.

Keeping with the theme of hidden treasure at the end of the rainbow, she does a rainbow battle, where kids hunt for coins in the grass, then trade them in for cups of non-toxic powdered paint to throw on each other.

Paddock loves getting children “up and moving and just excited to do something a little different that week,” Paddock said.

If you’ve ever seen a color run, the result of the rainbow battle is pretty similar. Though the paint is supposed to wash off, Paddock recommends that kids only wear clothes they wouldn’t mind getting messy or stained.

Also on the list for spring break is a Kool-Aid Play-Doh workshop, where kids get to mix up their own colorful (and fruity) creation while drinking some Kool-Aid.

In the style of the Minute to Win It game show, Edgerton’s activity of the same name gets kids doing small challenges in goofy ways, like stacking a set of items using only chopsticks. Paddock said they’ll provide cereal bars to fuel the pint-sized competitors.

If you’re after more of a spectator experience, Paddock has planned for that, too, with an educational show from Mad Science.

Each event has a different day and time, so check the city’s website to find the exact event details. There’s no charge, but attendees must be Edgerton residents.

Looking ahead, Paddock has more fun planned for the coming months. That includes three movie nights, with the first one on May 11. Once the spring break activities are over, she’ll be asking people to vote on what ’80s movie will make the marquee for that event, hosted in Martin Creek Park.

Paddock has shows from Animal Wonders that feature critters, conservation and ecology on her list for summer and said the details of those would be available soon.

It’s a lot for her department of one to handle, but she said others often pitch in to help her pull off the fun.
