Business notes: Westlake hardware workers pitch in to help Olathe family

Westlake’s good deed

Volunteers from several Westlake Ace Hardware stores have spent the past week working on a home makeover project for an Olathe family. The workers installed siding and gutters, painted the home and refreshed the landscaping as part of a project in conjunction with the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals of Greater Kansas City. Westlake said several other area businesses contributed to the project.

Westlake has partnered with the nonprofit organization in previous years, and this time the company chose to help a family whose child has been diagnosed with two types of cancer.

New chamber board

The Overland Park Chamber of Commerce said the following members have been nominated to serve three-year terms on the organization’s board of directors. Terms will begin on Jan. 1, 2015.

The nominees: Jarad Falk , Time Warner Cable; Mike Hess, HNTB Corp.; Jani Johnson, St. Luke’s South; Tim Kelley, Valley View Bank; Ryan Reeves, UnitedLex Corp.; and Clint Robinson, Black & Veatch.

Guilty plea

The manager of a Chinese restaurant, Wei’s Super Buffet No. 2 at 7531 Wornall Road in Kansas City, has pleaded guilty to conspiring to harbor workers who were in the United States illegally, according to the U.S. District Attorney’s office in Kansas. Quan Liu pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to harbor aliens. The Chinese restaurant was owned by an Olathe company, which was headed by a co-defendant, Wei Liu, who is awaiting trial, the government said.
