Letters: Trump’s insults, payday loans, Kansas voters face key election

The most disturbing comments about presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump I have heard thus far came from an interview on CNN with a business contemporary of his who has known him for 40 years. She says he has not changed a bit since she first met him.

He is still the most effective salesman she has ever known, and although she would never vote for him for president and does not think he would be a terrible one, she predicts that he will win the November election. I was stunned.

Then as I listened, I found myself agreeing with her assessment. She says he will not keep his word because he constantly changes his mind. He will not follow through because he feels no commitment to what he says.

But you know what? I am afraid that the people who have decided to support him don't care. They don't want to be confused by the facts.

They want to believe him when he says: “Believe me. I know exactly what to do.”

Although he doesn't have a clue. Kansans should recognize this pattern and know all too well that a misguided leader can bring down a state. This can also happen to a country.

So each of us must vote. We must make clear at the polls that we want to keep American ideals front and center, even if we are lukewarm in our support for the candidate who represents those ideals. The alternative will be President Donald Trump.

Think about that and be frightened.

Marriage endures

After much back on forth on the demise of Meadowbrook Country Club and its clubhouse, 913 on May 25, “At long last, massive project gets started,” stated that the clubhouse “will be replaced.”

It is a little bittersweet as we were married there 38 years ago and look at it with fondness as we drive by it, but we guess most things do not last forever, although our marriage seems to have stood the test of time.

Any action taken against these predatory lenders would be greatly appreciated. However, why is everyone who writes about them afraid to call them what they are — usurers and legalized loan sharks.

Sections 891 to 896 Title 18 of the U.S. Code, Department of Justice, should take precedence over state control. If an individual was caught loaning money at the rates that the payday lenders do, they would be spending a number of years behind bars for usury, or loan sharking.

How can these predators be protected by laws that don't give an individual the same privileges?

Possibly it is too late for democracy to survive because of the attitudes of those who are politically correct bullies. The letter writer of “Republican swirl” in the May 18 issue of 913 shouts derogatory names at all those who have a different opinion or belief from his, labels them, puts them in a box and sits on the lid and thinks what a swell and intelligent guy he is.

Of course, he will not recognize that this is his behavior because he is right and whoever disagrees with him is wrong. As far as naming the wrong-doers on the opposite side of the aisle, that is risky business because there are about as many “saints and sinners” on both sides to go around.

If there is no respect or civility toward those who disagree with us then democracy does have a much harder time surviving.

Informed voting

The Kansas state primary is Aug 2 and the general election is Nov. 8. If you are unhappy about the leadership provided by Gov. Sam Brownback and his legislators, don’t sit idle, take action.

Remember that the legislators who helped Brownback make a mess of Kansas have now abandoned him in hopes of getting re-elected. Their campaign material will disguise the fact that they were complicit. Don’t be confused. Don’t even bother to read their spin on reality.
