913 readers talk about high school football, KCI, wage gap, ad overload

High school football

I do not understand how there can be football playoffs going on with some very exciting games, and The Kansas City Star only covers a few of the games. Recently, a game was won by a field goal in the final 2 seconds of play; another game was won by a 2-point conversion in the last 33 seconds of play.

Where did I lean all of this? On the internet, because my newspaper did not report it.

If you want people to buy your newspaper, I think these games should be covered by your paper. Some schools seem to get more coverage than others.

KCI’s failings

A representative from Southwest Airlines recently talked about the need for a new terminal at Kansas City International Airport (10-29, 4A, “Southwest pushes plan for a single KCI terminal”). I fly 20-plus weeks a year out of KCI. I have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly of airports. KCI needs a new airport. Why?

1. The terminals are too narrow. The slowest person controls the people flow in both directions.

2. The terminals are dark and dreary. Bathrooms are old and grungy.

3. Have you driven through Terminal B any evening or early morning? What a hazard. Not enough lanes and too many people in bad spots. What about Terminal C when American flights arrive?

4. It is dangerous for passengers when they come out of the terminal and try to get a rental car bus or a courtesy bus. That narrow strip of concrete is going to get someone seriously injured or killed.

5. Food options stink. Especially when connecting flights or trying to get a meal on the way out of town during peak periods.

6. Have you ever watched the faces of visitors to Kansas City coming off the plane and trying to figure out how to get out of the gate areas? Embarrassing.

Wage gap

If you haven’t seen the new series on Amazon Prime “Good Girls Revolt,” drop everything now and start streaming. The show focuses on a 1969 newsroom, based on a true story, and addresses issues of both gender and racial inequality.

Watching the show makes any woman cringe, be she a feminist or not. Women in the show are overworked and underappreciated, forced into atrocious sexual situations by their male counterparts, and refused promotion into writing positions.

Forty-seven years later, women are still facing this same discrimination in the workplace. As if sexual harassment and workplace discrimination weren’t enough, reports state that in 2015, women were still making 80 cents to every man’s dollar. So not only are women working through more difficult circumstances, they’re getting paid less to do it.

If you’re one of the very few women who have not experienced gender inequality in the workplace, count yourself lucky; if you’re a man who claims to have never witnessed it, I encourage you to watch the show and take a second to reevaluate.

Gender inequality comes in all different forms, and we must all, regardless of gender, unite to recognize and stand up against it.

Ad overload

The Friday before the election, I got to the point where I was tired of the local and national news, and the barrage of political ads. One after another, after another, after another, blah, blah.

So I turned to re-runs of "The Andy Griffith Show." Four-year-old Ron Howard, Don Knotts. It made me laugh.

Also, the political ads were gone. However, there was a barrage, one after another, after another, of Time Warner commercials.
