913 readers discuss Kansas economy, WWI centennial, greed, KCI, Midwest weather

Kansas’ bright side

As an avid Star reader, I have learned several things about the editorial board. One, Yael Abouhalkah and Steve Rose really must dislike Gov. Sam Brownback. And another, they apparently believe that if the state of Kansas doesn’t have the money from taxes, it must simply evaporate into thin air.

They have consistently found negative elements in every bit of good news that comes out of Kansas. I have a couple questions for the negative pundits. How could $1.5 billion be injected into the Kansas economy any quicker and efficiently than letting the people keep their money? Do you believe that government will spend the money more wisely than the people who earn it?

While very few programs have been slighted, reading these editorials, you would think that Kansas has to start turning off half the lights in the Capitol. Things in Kansas are not as bleak as reported, or editorialized.

Education, highways and social programs always want for more money. While these are important to our citizens, the largess of state operations is what is truly crippling our economy, not the people who got to keep their own money.

WWI centennial

From Kansas, 80,000 served in World War I, or the Great War. We are now observing the centennial of that war — a war that changed everything, because of the effects it had on how the world lived. What can we do to commemorate it?

Efforts are ongoing to build a memorial in Washington, D.C., to remember all who served.

The Countdown to Veterans Day Campaign calls attention to this effort. Led by the United States World War I Centennial Commission, they seek to raise funds for the new memorial beginning this Nov. 11. More information can be found at www.WW1CC.org.

One should also remember that Nov. 11 was — and still is — Armistice Day, the day in 1918 that hostilities in WWI came to an end.

In Kansas City, one should support the National World War I Museum and Memorial, a splendid tribute to the worldwide conflict.

In Kansas, the Kansas World War I Centennial Committee is promoting local efforts to remember those who served. For more information about Kansas and the war, go to www.kansasww1.org. You can even comment on the site with your community’s remembrance of the Great War.

Moving backward

There is a possibility mankind is working toward a caveman mentality. What will future generations have as a benchmark of truth?

Due to the power of social media, it may take forever to erase the damage to youth caused by endless lies told during the political process. I was going to mention something about greed as well, but that subject is a lost cause.

New KCI

I'm writing to provide my support for building a new airport. In 1989, Denver spent more than $2 billion on a new airport 24 miles from downtown. Today, the annual economic impact exceeds more than $26 billion.

Southwest Airlines is in favor of building a new airport, and they have over 30 years of experience in the industry. So their advice should be a valuable input.

A modern air terminal is essential in today's environment. Kansas City’s airport options have been discussed for the past five years. If the city had been more proactive, the airport could have been completed by now.

If we wait for another five years, the cost will be higher. The cost for the new airport will be funded by airline lease payments, passengers, parking and concession fees. It would not involve general taxpayer dollars. By building a new airport, Kansas City would have additional revenue to invest in basic infrastructure improvements.

Kansas City needs to become a more progressive city. Over the past 20 years, we have lost the NCAA to Indianapolis and now the American Royal to Kansas City, Kan. I think Kansas City is moving in the wrong direction.

Midwest weather

Long pants

Short pants

Solid shoes or sandals

About this crazy weather

I do not have a handle

Sunny days

Cloudy days

Calm days or storms

Living in the Midwest

There just is not a “norm”

But here, I love

Where I was born

Of clime, I’d take no other

The changes are what makes it great

In “sameness” I would smother!
