Fairway student wins Fulbright

Elisabeth Hodge, of Fairway, has won a Fulbright award to teach English to high school students in Malaysia in 2017.

Hodge graduated from Wheaton College with a double major in elementary education and mathematics, the Norton, Mass. college said.

Hodge, who will leave for Malaysia in January, attended the Pembroke Hill School in Kansas City. She will be a substitute teacher there and at other area schools this fall.

Hodge said in a news release from the college that the Fulbright award is a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience, acclimate to, and teach in a part of the world that is new to me.”

Comcast scholarship winner

Brant Pitcaim, a graduate of Olathe North High School, has received a $1,000 scholarship from Comcast NBCUniversal.

Pitcaim was one of 10 high school seniors in the Kansas City area recognized by the company for their community service, academic performance and leadership skills. Each received a one-time $1,000 award.

Young Leawood entrepreneur honored

Gracie Schram, who graduated from Blue Valley North High School, was recognized as one of the top young entrepreneurs in the country by the National Federation of Independent Business.

The Leawood singer and songwriter was one of five finalists for the NFIB Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards. As a national finalist, Schram received a $10,000 scholarship from the small business organization. The finalists were honored at an event in June in Washington, D.C.
