Joco Gateway spurs more closures

Get ready for more road closures for the Johnson County Gateway project.

Beginning 10 p.m. April 4, the loop from northbound Interstate 35 to westbound Interstate 435 will be closed — 24 hours a day — until mid-June. And beginning 10 p.m. April 5, the loop from southbound I-35 to eastbound 435 will be closed until late October.

The planned detours to westbound and eastbound I-435:

Northbound I-35 to westbound I-435 traffic: Take eastbound 87th Street to southbound U.S. 69 to westbound I-435. Warning: U-turns are not allowed on 87th Street.

Southbound I-35 to eastbound I-435 traffic: Take southbound I-35 to southbound U.S. 69 to eastbound I-435. A backup detour — for those who miss the U.S. 69 route — is eastbound 119th Street to northbound I-35 to eastbound I-435.

In addition to the closures, eastbound traffic on I-435 from Santa Fe Trail Drive in Lenexa to U.S. 69 will be shifted into three lanes — and only the far right lane will be able to exit onto Quivira Road, U.S. 69 and Antioch Road. That change will begin at 10 p.m. April 11 and last through late fall as the Kansas Department of Transportation widens I-435.

The work is part of the second phase of the $288 million Johnson County Gateway project at the Interstate 435/Interstate 35/Kansas 10 interchange.

Already, the interchange at I-35 and 95th Street is closed until late August while workers build a diverging diamond interchange, similar to one recently completed at Kansas 10 and Ridgeview Road.

Phase 2 is to be completed by December.
