Google Fiber signups underway in Westwood, Westwood Hills, Mission Woods, Roeland Park

Google Fiber has begun soliciting its first customers in Johnson County.

The company announced Monday it had begun work to qualify neighborhoods in Westwood, Westwood Hills, Mission Woods and Roeland Park for its ultra-fast Internet broadband connections.

Google also said that customers in Kansas City, Kan., and central Kansas City who live in neighborhoods where the firm has already decided to sell service have another chance to sign contracts. Residents there have until Aug. 7 to buy the service.

The latest “rallies” in Johnson County come as the company has cut a deal to eventually build a network and sell its service in nearby Overland Park, perhaps the most lucrative territory in the Kansas City market.

Residents in the four Johnson County communities have until Sept. 12 to see if enough people register for the service to convince Google to build in their neighborhoods. Google sets thresholds in each neighborhood, based on how much it will cost to extend its network in those areas, that determine whether it will ultimately sell them Internet and TV subscriptions.
