How to learn about highway updates, paint a mural and more in Johnson County
One of the biggest road projects in Johnson County — the U.S. 69 Expansion Project — is nearing its completion in early 2026. Now, residents can get in the know through presentations being held throughout the county.

Johnson County: Learn about highway expansion
69Express project team members are starting to host a round of presentations throughout Johnson County, including from 11 a.m.to 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29, at the Hen House, 11930 College Blvd., Overland Park. The team will answer questions and share plans for 2025 construction work, information on how to use the express lanes and how to get a KTAG.
Other appearances will include:
- Sept. 6 and Sept. 20 at the Matt Ross Community Center Farmer’s Market from 9 a.m. to noon
- Sept. 12 at the Deanna Rose Farmstead from 9 to 11 a.m.
- Sept. 2 and Oct. 7 at the Overland Park Arboretum from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Sept. 22 at the Deer Creek Hen House on from 4 to 6 p.m.
- Sept. 27 at the Spring Hill Fall Festival from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Merriam: Join a public art installation
Stop by between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug 30, and help out on a new art installation at the community center parking structure at 6040 Slater St.
The public is being asked to help paint the 3D elements that is part of the Milagros Collective mural. The exterior staircase will feature shapes inspired by leaves and seeds, with colors flowing from the warm tones of fall to the bright greens of spring. Inside, the interior staircase will celebrate Merriam’s native plants with vibrant patterns, sculptural wall elements, and window designs.
The artists also will be available at 6:30 p.m., Sept. 4, at the community center.
Merriam: Celebrate Hispanic American art
The opening reception for Hispanic Americans and the Arts is at 7 p.m., Sept. 4, at the Tim Murphy Art Gallery, 6040 Slater St. Meet featured artists Gil Ortiz, Socorro Reyes Ramirez, and Alexander (Paint Wraith). The exhibit will remain on display through Sept. 27. Information:
Mission: Give feedback on roads and safety
The City of Mission is needing residents’ help on a comprehensive safety action plan through the Safe Streets and Roads for All program. You can take a survey or drop pins on traffic safety concerns or suggestions using the Safe Streets Interactive Map.
Overland Park: Music at the arboretum
Music Nights at the Arboretum will feature Taylor & Tye Music at 5 p.m. Thursday Aug. 28 at Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, 8909 W. 179th St. Café Celeste will be open.
Overland Park: Movies at the farmstead
Moo-vie Night will be held from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug 30, at the Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead, 13800 Switzer Road. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket for seating. Enjoy the farmstead and fun activities before the movie “Up” begins at dusk, about 8:30 p.m.
Roeland Park: Dogs can take a dip
Paw-ty at the Pool will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Sept. 3 at the Roeland Park Aquatic Center, 4843 Rosewood Drive. $5 per dog. Humans get in free.
