Johnson County

This dog at a Johnson County shelter isn’t beneath sneaking in a ‘sniffy kiss’ or 2

Derek

Derek

Breed: Pit bull

Age: 4 years old

Derek was found as a stray, and while his past wasn’t the easiest, he’s all about looking forward to a better future. It might take him a little while to warm up to new faces or loud noises (like the vacuum), but with a little patience, he’ll quickly become your loyal best friend, showing you just how sweet and loving he can be.

If his soulful eyes don’t win you over, his playful, silly personality surely will. He’s full of puppy-like playfulness, but he has the maturity of an adult dog. Tug-of-war? Count him in! But his favorite thing? Being with his humans. He’s gentle with his mouth and loves sneaking in a “sniffy kiss” or two.

Derek is eligible for Melissa’s Second Chances Foster to Adopt program.

Gilligan

Breed: Pit bull mix

Age: 3 years old

Gilligan was rescued from a hoarding situation along with 30 other dogs. He was living with another dog in ramshackle pen made of rough metal and wire. He didn’t have any water or food and was desperate for a second chance.

The team at Wayside has worked with Gilligan to learn how to trust humans. He has come a long way in his journey to learning how to be a dog, and his love of life is contagious. He’s done great in foster homes with other pets and is ready to find his forever family. Gilligan is also available for a Slumber Pawty to make sure it’s a good fit for him and his potential family. Meet Gilligan today at Wayside Waifs.

Missy

Breed: Domestic longhair mix

Age: 15 years

Missy has lived a lot of life, but her owner passed away and she’s ready for a new chapter. She is shy at first but warms up and is feeling confident in her foster home. She is an independent girl and looking for a quiet home. She also needs a family that can be patient as she takes time to adjust to her new life. She is also available for a Slumber Pawty before finalizing adoption, to ensure it’s a good fit for both of you. Reach out to the Wayside Waifs team to learn more about Missy or set up a time to meet her.

Wayside Waifs is able to welcome visitors without an appointment. To learn about the adoption process and available animals, go here. And sign up for the Mardi Paws – 2025 Fur Ball Gala, where the beads are flying, tails are wagging, and the spirit of New Orleans is alive. The event will include a silent and live auction, drinks and the Paw-rade, where costumed pets and their human companions will strut their stuff in style.
