Discounts are available to those who sign up early for the Turkey Creek Festival 5K Run/Walk, which will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. May 20.

The race this year will begin at the Merriam Marketplace at 5740 Merriam Drive. The run/walk is for individuals and teams, plus there’s a 50-yard dash youth sprint. The overall top male and female and top three finishers in each age group will receive an award. All participants receive a finisher medal.

Costs are $25 on or before April 30 and $35 starting May 1 for individuals; $5 on or before April 30 and $7 starting May 1 for youth sprint; $80 on or before April 30 or $20 per person, and $120 or $30 per person starting May 1 for teams of four or more. NEJC Chamber Golf Classic scheduled in Lenexa

More than 200 participants are expected for annual Northeast Johnson County Chamber Golf Classic to be held June 12 at Falcon Ridge Golf Club, 20200 Prairie Star Parkway in Lenexa. The event will include prizes, food, drinks, networking opportunities and friendly competition. Ballots mailed on sales tax issues in Olathe

Ballots have been mailed to registered Olathe residents about renewing the street maintenance sales tax and the parks sales tax. The 3/8 cent street maintenance sales tax was approved by Olathe voters in 2013. Nearly 70% of street maintenance projects have been funded by this tax from 2014 to 2022.

The 1/8 cent parks sales tax was approved by Olathe voters in 1999 and renewed in 2004 and 2014. This is the primary fund for construction and maintenance of trails and recreation amenities. Without renewal, the street maintenance tax sunsets March 31, 2024 and the parks tax sunsets March 31, 2025. The ballot will contain two separate questions regarding renewal of each sales tax. Celebrate teen literary arts magazine in Lenexa

There will be a celebration of the 20th issue of “elementia,” at 6:30 p.m. April 25 at the Lenexa City Center Library, 8778 Penrose Lane, Lenexa.

“Elementia” is a literary arts magazine published to represent and uplift young adults. It includes original poetry, fiction, nonfiction, graphic stories, photography and illustrations. The 20th issue explores the theme of cycles through teen writing and art. The celebration will include art exhibits, refreshments and music. Free copies of “elementia” also will be available.

Pleasant Ridge Middle wins State Science Olympiad

The Pleasant Ridge Middle School Science Olympiad team won its fifth consecutive Kansas State Science Olympiad championship tournament at Wichita State University.

The Overland Park school’s team will represent the state of Kansas at the National Science Olympiad Tournament at Wichita State University in May. At the Science Olympiad, students compete as teams in 23 events that span life, physical, Earth and space sciences, engineering, and building complex devices.

The Pleasant Ridge Middle School Science Olympiad Club was first established in 2016. The inaugural team qualified for the Kansas State tournament in their first year and finished 11th in the state competition. Since then, the team has won every Kansas State Tournament, and represented Kansas in the national tournaments each year.
