Aquinas finishes on top at Olathe North’s Wrestle for the Cure
There is no shame in wearing a pink singlet if it’s for a good cause.
Pink certainly was the predominant color Jan. 27 during the Wrestle for the Cure Tournament at Olathe North.
It was the color of choice both for the host Eagles and St. Thomas Aquinas, who met in the final of the dual tournament after winning their respective pools.
The Saints won the tournament with a 40-29 victory over Olathe North.
Aquinas won eight matches in the championship, five by pins.
Malachi Vann (106), Jared Simma (126), Tommy Carroll (145), Danny Carroll (182), and Peyton Reeves (285) each won by fall for Aquinas.
Meanwhile, Johnny Akin claimed a 5-2 decision against Olathe North’s Gunner Murphy at 132 pounds, Anthony Gaona recorded a major decision at 195, and Eli Berggren won with a 6-0 decision at 220.
The Eagles had some highlights of their own.
Jevon Parrish won by pin at 138 pounds for Olathe North. Javier Contreras (152) and McCoy Stoker (160) recorded major-decision victories and Keegan Slyter (120) also won.
Aquinas reached the final with victories versus Leavenworth (40-25), Staley (42-30), Wyandotte (64-9) and Washburn Rural (42-36) during pool play.
On its march to the final, Olathe North downed Shawnee Mission East (65-13), Emporia (43-21), Wichita South (35-31) and Blue Valley Northwest (39-31).
