BV Northwest boys stumble again during 810 Varsity Showcase versus Grandview
The 810 Varsity Showcase has not been kind to Blue Valley Northwest this season.
The Huskies lost Jan. 6 versus Park Hill South 56-52 during the first of two Showcase sessions at St. Thomas Aquinas.
Playing in the second session Jan. 13 at Lee’s Summit, BV Northwest lost for the second straight weekend, this time against Grandview 58-53.
The Huskies (4-4) fought a nip-and-tuck battle against a Bulldogs team featuring Division-I signees Jordan Lathon (Northwestern) and Mason Taylor (Air Force).
Lathon, who missed most of December with an injury, scored nine of his 11 points during the fourth quarter to help the Bulldogs (11-2) hang on down the stretch.
“It’s great to be back and in a big game with my teammates, and us playing well together,” Lathon told 810 Varsity. “Everyone stepped up at the end and we got a big win tonight.”
Lathon was one of three Grandview players who scored in double figures. Michael Nweke led the Bulldogs with 16 points and DeAndre Sorrells chipped in 14.
BV Northwest, which trailed 18-10 in the first quarter but took a 41-35 lead into the fourth quarter, was led by Parker Braun’s 14 points.
Joseph Pleasant scored 12 points, Christian Braun added 11 points and Sam Ward had 10 points for the reigning Kansas Class 6A state champions.
The Huskies weren’t the only Kansas school to struggle in the Missouri-side Showcase.
Blue Valley, despite getting 17 points and eight rebounds from 6-foot-8 senior Siler Tschirhart, lost 58-51 versus Lee’s Summit North.
Broncos big man Elijah Farr countered Siler with 23 points, six rebounds and four blocks and helped keep Siler scoreless in the fourth quarter.
Blue Valley’s girls, meanwhile, were limited to 13 points during the first half of a 53-37 loss to Lee’s Summit West.
Catherine Szukalski scored 13 points and Katie Beth Jones added 11 to lead the Tigers, while Sydney Kemp scored 14 points, Marisa Ritchey had 12 and Kenzie Beeler added 10 for the victorious Titans.
