Not eager to cook a Thanksgiving feast, let Shawnee Mission culinary students help
Culinary arts students and SkillsUSA competitors are holding their annual pie, pastry, and sides sale through the Shawnee Mission School District’s student-run Broadmoor Bistro.
Customers may order online through Nov. 20 and will pick up their items from 2 to 6 p.m. on Nov. 21 and from 8 a.m. to noon on Nov. 22 at the Broadmoor Bistro, 8200 W. 71st St.

Mahaffie honors eighth-grader for volunteer service
Each year, the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm recognizes a youth volunteer who exhibits leadership, is a good example to peers, has a love of history, and has made a measurable contribution to the historic site in Olathe. This year’s honoree is eighth-grade student Rebecca McCreight.
Rebecca began volunteering with Mahaffie in 2012. Her favorite activities include sharing information about the Mahaffie house, helping with fall harvest activities, and using the cook stove. She also volunteers at a local grocery store, bagging groceries for the holidays; helps with street cleanups and food drives; runs cross country; and made the principal’s honor roll.
The award is presented in honor of Carrie Newson, a former Mahaffie volunteer who died in a 1998 car accident. The stone fireplace and stagecoach artwork on the patio of the Heritage Center are dedicated in her memory.
Don’t leave animals off your gift list
The Ernie Miller Nature Center is accepting gifts through a program called “Holidays for the Animals.”
The Nature Center, 909 N. Kansas 7 in Olathe, needs supplies for animals kept at the center as well as for wildlife that comes to the feeders.
It’s asking for newspapers; brown and green duct tape; various sizes of clear critter totes or pet keeper boxes with lids; bags of reptile bedding; gift certificates to LifeTime Pets, Price Chopper, Walmart or Petland; pinewood shavings; non-clumping cat litter; bleach; fragrance-free laundry soap; bags of safflower or black oil sunflower seeds (no seed mixes); suet cakes; rolls of 1/4 - and 3/8 -inch sisal rope; and white or apple cider vinegar.
Donors will be listed in the nature center’s Tracks newsletter, if they fill out a card when dropping their gifts at Ernie Miller.
Merriam to dedicate sculpture at holiday event
The city of Merriam will dedicate a new sculpture on Dec. 1 during its “Soups on with Santa” and mayor’s tree lighting event.
The event, which runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., begins at the Merriam Marketplace, 5740 Merriam Drive. Participants then will adjourn to the Irene B. French Community Center for soup, a visit with Santa Claus, and games.
Parents are asked to bring a wrapped and tagged gift, worth $10 or less, for Santa to give to give to their child.

The sculpture, “Planting the Seeds”, was fashioned by Colorado artist Christopher Weed. It consists of three 7-foot orbs of polished stainless steel that suggest sprouting seeds.
City spokeswoman Jenna Gant said the city has budgeted for five public art pieces at $100,000 each. The first, “Still time,” was dedicated last year.
Culinary team tryouts will be at JCCC
Johnson County Community College is the competition site for the 2020 Midwest regional Junior Olympic tryouts for the American Culinary Federation’s Culinary Team USA.
The ACF describes its Culinary Team USA as representing the United States on the global stage — showcasing American chefs, cuisine, and products to the world.
“Johnson County Community College is home to one of the leading culinary facilities in the nation,” Edward Adel, associate professor of hospitality management, said in a news release. “Because of this, our facility has the honor of hosting tryouts for the 2020 Midwest regional Junior Olympics.”
As a result, the college’s culinary students will be able to meet nationally recognized culinary chef judges as well as student competitors from the region.
Tryouts for the USA team are tentatively scheduled for Jan. 7-8 at JCCC and later at three other schools across the country.
Applications for the 2020 team must be submitted by Dec. 1 and prospective team members cannot be older than 23 on April 1, 2020.
