Principal named for new Olathe middle school

Sarah Guerrero, principal at Olathe’s Indian Trail Middle School since 2015, will take the same job at the new Summit Trail Middle School before the school opens in August.

The Olathe school board approved her appointment this month, when it also named and set boundaries for the new school at 22201 W. 118th St. in northwest Olathe. To find a boundary map, go to olatheschools.com and click on the news release about Guerrero’s appointment.

Before taking over at Indian Trail, Guerrero was an administrator in the Piper School District. She also has experience as a teacher at California and Mission Trail middle schools in Olathe, in the Piper School District, and as a teacher and coach in Texas.

She holds a doctoral degree in school leadership from Baker University.

Olathe disposal site reopens after fire

After being closed by a fire earlier this year, Olathe’s Transfer Station Drop-Off has reopened to the public at 1681 S. Valley Road.

The disposal site operates from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 7 a.m. to noon Saturdays, but will close temporarily Nov. 17-20 for a door installation.

All customers and employees will now be required to wear high-visibility vests upon entering the facility. For those who don’t own a hunting vest or some other brightly colored clothing, vests are on sale for $10 at the scale house.

Hear Vietnam-era music in Olathe

A local band, “The Cody Wyoming Deal,” will wrap up Big Read KC by playing music from the Vietnam War era from 7 to 9 p.m. on Nov. 18 at the Olathe Downtown Library, 201 E. Park St.

Music at the free event will include tunes by the Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Buffalo Springfield, Jefferson Airplane, and others. No registration is required.

For this year’s Big Read KC, libraries across the area read “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien. It’s a collection of stories about platoon members in the Vietnam War.

Free day at Johnson County Museum on Nov. 22

If you haven’t seen the Johnson County Museum in its new location in the former King Louie bowling alley, you can do so for free on Wednesday, Nov. 22, the day before Thanksgiving.

The Museum, 8788 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park, includes a 1950s All-Electric House, an exhibit titled “Becoming Johnson County,” and the KidScape experience — a 3,500-square-foot area that lets children learn about the past by experiencing an 1870s farmstead, a 1900s city, and a 1950s diner.

No registration is required. The museum will be open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Household waste collected delayed until Nov. 18

Because of Veterans Day, Olathe has postponed its Household Hazardous Waste drop-off event by a week. It’s now Nov. 18.

All Johnson County residents can drop off paint, light bulbs, aerosol cans, cleaners and other Household Hazardous waste from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the HHW facility, 1420 S. Robinson Drive, behind Public Works and Customer Service.

Residents will be asked to provide a photo ID and a general description of their items. Visit OlatheKS.org for a list of acceptable items.

New county Parks& Rec catalog coming soon

The next issue of the Johnson County Park & Recreation District’s My JCPRD Activities catalog will be online Nov. 17 at www.jcprd.com and in print the week of Nov. 20.

The 72-page publication lists more than 500 programs offered between January and April.

Registration for those classes begins at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 20.

Catalogs also will be available at Johnson County Library branches, community centers, various businesses, and at county park district locations.

Donate a bike, have a drink

The city of Mission invites people to donate bicycles they’ve outgrown or no longer want, so they can be refurbished for families the city has adopted for the holidays or others in need.

Riders can do so at BikeWalkKC’s Handlebar Happy Hour and Bike Drive, which will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 16 at The Bar, 6101 Johnson Drive.

Donors can stay for a drink or food and meet others interested in cycling.
