Miege-BlueValley battle highlights high school football openers

Two weeks after their Missouri counterparts took to the field, the high school football season opened in Kansas last Friday with game all over the west side of the metro area.

One of the most anticipated matchups took place at Bishop Miege, where the three-time defending Class 4 Division I state champion Stags played host to East Kansas League rival Blue Valley.

Last season, Blue Valley handed Miege its only loss and stayed unbeaten until the Class 6A state title game. But things are different for Blue Valley this season. The Tigers are young, and they have a new head coach following the death of Eric Driskell from a ruptured brain aneurysm last February.

That youth showed against a veteran Miege team, which rolled over Blue Valley 55-10. The Stags had a 21-3 lead by halftime and put the game away with three touchdowns in the third quarter. Quarterback Carter Putz threw for 156 yards and two touchdowns for the Stags, while running backs Cameron Clark and Brison Cobbins scored two TDs each. Clark had 138 yards rushing on nine carries and Cobbins totaled 148 yards on nine carries.
