National Marine Corps League Convention

Overland Park will host the 2017 National Marine Corps League Convention. More than 700 Marine veterans are expected to attend the weeklong event from Aug. 13-18 at the Overland Park Convention Center.

Marines will get a taste of Kansas City during their stay, including a visit to the National World War I Museum and Memorial and a barbecue dinner from Fiorella’s Jack Stack.

The Marines will also participate in community initiatives during their stay, including teambuilding events for local food banks and work with a local battered women and children’s shelter.

More information can be found by contacting Visit Overland Park.

New member joins Leawood Police Department

The Leawood Police Department May 2 added a new member to its team. K9 Officer Kimo, a 1 1/2 -year-old German Shepherd, first joined Leawood Police Officer Josh Hayes at Shallow Creek Kennels in Pennsylvania before coming to Kansas.

Kimo was born in Czechoslovakia. The two will work together in coming weeks to learn about each other through training exercises. Kimo is currently learning about narcotic detection and tracking and patrol apprehension.

Residents are invited to wave at Kimo if they see him around in Leawood.
