Shawnee offering grants to downtown businesses
Shawnee business grants
The City of Shawnee is offering five grants worth $5,000 each to downtown businesses that make exterior property improvements worth at least $10,000. The city also is offering $2,000 grants for painting, landscaping, lighting, parking and or other improvements worth at least $5,000. Grant applications are available at www.cityofshawnee.org and at the city’s planning department, 11110 Johnson Drive. Whole Foods donation
The Whole Foods Market at 7401 W. 91st St. in Overland Park donated 5 percent of its net sales on Jan. 7 to Operation Wildlife to support the organization’s efforts to care for a bald eagle suffering from lead poisoning. Funds from the store’s Community Giving Day were also earmarked to purchase materials for an aquatic habitat enclosure.
Operation Wildlife, located in Linwood, Kan., is a nonprofit wildlife rehabilitation organization.
Record births
Shawnee Mission Medical Center said the number of babies delivered at its birth center reached record levels in 2014. The hospital said the unit delivered 4,915 babies, up from 2013’s record 4,474 babies. The hospital reported 2,466 girls were delivered last year, and 2,449 boys.
