KC man who once cut off a woman’s finger convicted in stabbing

A Jackson County judge has convicted a Kansas City man with a notorious past for stabbing a friend in the arm during a brawl over the victim’s wife, prosecutors said Thursday.

After a bench trial, Judge Sandra C. Midkiff found Gary D. Lovelady, 49, guilty late Wednesday of first-degree assault and armed criminal action for the incident on April 30.

Lovelady spent about 30 years in prison after being convicted in the 1982 assault of a 76-year-old woman, whose finger he amputated with a butcher knife to steal her rings.
