CommunityAmerica among nation’s healthiest credit unions

CommunityAmerica Credit Union has landed on an exclusive list of the nation’s healthiest credit unions.

The Lenexa-based financial institution was named to the 2014 ranking of the 200 healthiest credit unions in the United States by DepositAccounts, an industry research firm. CommunityAmerica was ranked 163rd, and was the only credit union in Kansas to make the list.

CommunityAmerica has more than 30 locations and about 600 employees, according to the research firm. It has total assets of nearly $2 billion.

DepositAccounts has compiled health rating scores of the approximately 13,000 federally insured banks and credit unions for many years, but this is the first year the company has published the scores in a rankings list of the top 200.

The research firm reviews several key financial measures, including capitalization, deposit growth and the value of loans considered at risk. From there, the company comes up with a numerical score.

The research firm said CommunityAmerica’s capitalization level was excellent, meaning it has a large cushion to cover any loans that may go bad in the future.

The report also highlighted the credit union’s 4.95 percent growth in deposits over the past year.

Four small Kansas banks were among the 200 healthiest banks in the country. The banks were in Stockton, Salina, Sterling and Solomon.
