Oktoberfest in Lee’s Summit

Downtown Lee’s Summit will be home this weekend to Oktoberfest, featuring German meals, three stages of entertainment, German dancers, a carnival, beer garden, free children's activities, contests and arts/crafts booths.

The event runs from 5 to 11 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday.

More than 70,000 people typically attend, according to the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce.

Horns aplenty at UMKC

The public is invited to a concert at 4 p.m. Saturday, which will conclude JazzFest at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

The Kansas City Horn Club is organizing the all-day educational and performance event, which is expected to draw 30 to 40 French horn players from around the area. Guest artist John McGuire, a horn professor at Colorado State University, will perform.

The concert will be at White Recital Hall, 4949 Cherry St. Donations will accepted.

New postmaster in Lone Jack

Cindy Wagner, customer service supervisor in the Lee’s Summit Post Office, has been appointed postmaster of Lone Jack. She began her postal career as a clerk in the Kansas City processing plant.

State officefor Cass official

Beverly Newman, chief juvenile officer for the 17th Judicial Circuit Court – Juvenile Division, has been elected president of the Missouri Juvenile Justice Association.

The 17th Circuit serves Cass and Johnson counties in Missouri.

Newman has been the circuit’s chief juvenile officer since 2006. She is responsible for operations, programming and case management at the juvenile offices and detention centers in both counties.

Newman also chairs the Juvenile Justice Standards Workgroup under the office of the Missouri State Courts Administrator.

Harrisonville Square has new tenant

The Harrisonville Chamber has moved from Mill-Walk Mall to its a larger headquarters at 106 S. Independence St. on the historic Harrisonville square.

“We want to see the square develop, and we want to be a part of it,” Chamber President Obie Carl said.

The business association also needed more space for meetings and chamber functions

Carl said the chamber found a way to meet both desires when he was approached about purchasing the former Hight & Associates Land Title building. Hight & Associates was moving a part of its operations to Raymore.

Fort Osage event

On Saturday, the Fort Osage National Historic Landmark will take visitors back to the time of the earliest European settlers with the Grand Festival of “Chez les Canses” or “Village of the Kansa.”

It’s a phrase attributed to Pierre Chouteau in describing the early settlement that would become Kansas City.

The festival, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., will include hand-sewing, cooking, tanning, woodworking and historic gardening — plus performances of late 18th century music at 10 a.m., and 2 p.m. Artisans will sell their wares, and an auction will be held at 3 p.m.

Admission fees range from $3 to $7, but children 4 and under get in free. Fort Osage is on the Missouri River at 107 Osage St. in Sibley.

St. Regis turns 50

St. John Francis Regis Catholic Church is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its founding in 1964.

Events start with a Mass for deceased parishioners at 7 p.m. Thursday.

A tailgate party in the church parking lot will run from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday before the Archbishop O’Hara High School football game.

Saturday events include a 5K run/walk at 8 a.m. and a Jubilee Party for adults at 7 p.m.

The new St. Regis facade will be blessed at 10:15 a.m. followed by Mass with former clergy members and a dessert reception.
